The KEPRO Annual Circular Packaging Conference (KACPC) is Kenya’s leading national platform for sustainable packaging, the circular economy, and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Governor of Mombasa County
Governor Nassir joins KACPC IV with more than a decade of public leadership across Parliament and county government, and a development agenda that places environmental management, the blue economy and public participation at the centre of service delivery.

Profile
H.E. Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir is the second Governor of Mombasa County, Kenya, and a national political leader with experience spanning county government, Parliament, enterprise and public communication.
His leadership is centred on accountable governance, inclusive economic opportunity and practical improvements in the quality of life of Mombasa's residents.
Public leadership
Governor Nassir was elected Governor in August 2022 after serving Mvita Constituency in the National Assembly for two terms, from 2013 to 2022.
In Parliament, he represented constituency interests, contributed to legislation and oversight, and advocated for devolution and the equitable allocation of national resources.
He served as Chairperson of the National Assembly's Public Investments Committee, leading parliamentary oversight of State corporations and the use of public funds.
Leadership roles
He is the Deputy Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement and serves as Chairperson of the Council of Governors Committee on Health.
These roles place him at the intersection of county service delivery, national policy and intergovernmental cooperation, particularly in advancing universal health coverage and strengthening devolved public services.
Education and professional background
Born and raised in Majengo, Mombasa, Governor Nassir attended Coast Academy and Lenana School before earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Inoorero University.
He also holds a certification in Leadership from Harvard University. Before entering elective public service, he founded Radio Rahma and served as its Chief Executive Officer.
Governance and development agenda
As Governor, he has pursued a people-centred agenda built around public participation, institutional accountability and service delivery at community level.
His administration's priorities include universal healthcare, water and sanitation, education, urban mobility, environmental management, social protection, youth enterprise, the blue economy and digital transformation.
A collaborative approach that brings together citizens, the private sector, development partners and both levels of government.

John Mwendwa, OGW
Chief Executive Officer, Invest Kenya
A seasoned investment, trade and industry expert with over two decades of experience across the public and private sectors in Kenya, East Africa and the wider continent. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Invest Kenya in January 2025.
Awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 2018 for his contribution to Kenya's Ease of Doing Business agenda.

John Mwendwa, OGW is a seasoned investment, trade and industry expert with over two decades of experience across the public and private sectors in Kenya, East Africa and the wider African continent. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Invest Kenya in January 2025.
Prior to this role, he served as Secretary for Strategy Execution at the President's Strategy and Execution Office, where he was responsible for driving national investment initiatives, improving the business climate and advancing private-sector development. He has also served in senior advisory and reform roles across government and previously worked within the Barclays Group in Kenya and South Africa.
In 2018, he was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) for his contribution to Kenya's Ease of Doing Business agenda.

Jeremy Kaburu is a Circular Economy and Research Specialist at Kenya Plastics Pact (KPP), where he works at the intersection of research, business and sustainability to advance Kenya's transition to a circular economy. He has a decade of experience in environmental research, sustainability and project implementation, private-sector engagement and community-based environmental action.
He has contributed to advancing plastics and packaging circularity, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks, sustainable textiles and fashion, and green skills, working closely with businesses, government, development partners and other stakeholders. His work includes practical guidance and knowledge products such as the Brands and Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) EPR Guidance, the No SUP Manual for the Tourism and Hospitality Sector, the Design Guidelines for Flexible Packaging Materials and the Gender Mainstreaming in Waste Management Toolkit. His work is underpinned by a strong interest in indigenous environmental knowledge and its potential to inform locally relevant and inclusive approaches to sustainability.
Jeremy holds a Master's degree in Sustainable Urban Development and a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Education from Kenyatta University. His broader research interests include circular economy, sustainable urban development, biodiversity conservation, green education and indigenous knowledge.

Joseph Nyongesa is a graduate of Industrial Engineering from the University of Missouri–Columbia, USA, and serves as CEO and General Secretary of the Institute of Packaging Professionals Kenya (IOPPK). He chairs the KEBS Packaging and Plastics Technical Committees and the EAC Packaging Harmonization Committee, and serves as a Regional Packaging Consultant under the ITC Mark Up Programme. He brings extensive global and regional packaging experience, including experience gained at Unilever, and has trained and supported businesses across Kenya, East Africa and the wider African region in packaging development.
As the former Technical Director and CEO of GS1 Kenya, he supported over 5,000 businesses across Kenya and the EAC in adopting retail barcodes and strengthening their market readiness. He has published the Kenya Packaging Status report, supported packaging exhibitions including PROPAK East Africa, and organised the Kenya and East Africa Packaging Summits. In 2012, he was elected the first President of the Africa Packaging Organisation, and he currently serves as a Board Member of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). He represents Kenya in international packaging forums and serves as a packaging judge for both the Afristar and WorldStar awards.

Vaishali Malde is the Technical Sales & Application Development Manager at Packaging Industries Limited, with over a decade of experience in the flexible packaging industry.
Her work focuses on developing and optimising packaging solutions that balance product protection, shelf life, manufacturing performance, commercial viability and sustainability. She has further developed her expertise through professional training in sustainable packaging, circular economy, solid waste management and postharvest technology.
Vaishali is passionate about advancing practical and scalable circular packaging solutions for Africa, connecting material innovation and design for recyclability with local manufacturing capabilities and market realities.
Runs technology-driven waste services that turn industrial waste into a resource.

Eng. James Kitavi is the founder and CEO of Kiseki Limited. He has over 15 years of experience in environmental management services, specialising in technology-driven waste management services geared to the circular economy. James is a recognised NEMA Expert, a member of the Environmental Institute of Kenya, an Environmental Auditor and a Project Manager.
He has been involved in curating and shaping responsible environmental services through waste management strategies for the oil and gas, manufacturing, hospitality and mining industries, both locally and in the region.
James is credited as a champion of the circular economy, having formulated creative, innovative, inclusive and disruptive solutions that have moved industries away from the linear way of managing waste and enabled them to benefit from converting waste into a resource. This has strengthened companies' compliance with local and international laws, including the Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations.
James is a Rotarian and a recipient of several awards, including Champion of Change 2025, and was named among the Top 40 Kenyan Men Under 40 in 2025.
Leads innovation and product development, and is Company Secretary of the Converters and Printers Association of Kenya.

Kunal Chandaria is the Managing Director of DPI Holdings Ltd, where he oversees sales, marketing, operations, innovation and product development. He previously served as Business Development Director at Paperbags Ltd, with extensive experience spanning sales, marketing, business development and product innovation.
Kunal also serves as Company Secretary of the Converters and Printers Association of Kenya and as a Board Member of DSCOOP EMEA, supporting collaboration, knowledge-sharing and educational initiatives within the printing industry. He holds a BA (Hons) in Psychology with minors in Geography from Huron University College, University of Western Ontario, Canada.
Helps African exporters cut emissions and meet EU rules including CBAM, CSRD and CSDDD.

Katrine Blaabjerg Sørensen is Regional Head of Sustainability at the Confederation of Danish Industry East Africa. Regionally, she leads sustainability work under the Sustainable African Value Chain Initiative (SAVI), helping businesses across Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and South Africa decarbonise their operations and measurably reduce their carbon footprint.
Her work combines GHG accounting, climate and ESG reporting, and EU regulatory frameworks such as CBAM, CSRD and CSDDD with hands-on capacity-building for African exporters and manufacturers. Katrine works at the intersection of industry, regulation and the green transition, helping companies cut emissions across their value chains and turn sustainability requirements into a competitive advantage.
